Eating too much of sugar can cause a dull and wrinkled skin. The more sugar you eat the more wrinkled your skin will be. Aging of the skin begins early and increases rapidly over a period of time. The skin becomes less supple and vulnerable to sun damage, which causes further wrinkling.
How Does Sugar Cause Wrinkles?
The sugar in the blood attaches itself to proteins to form harmful new molecules known as advanced glycation end products also known as AGEs. The more sugar one takes the more AGEs form. These AGEs accumulate and damage adjacent proteins. Protein keeps the skin vibrant. Collagen and elastin, which are protein fibers and keep the skin elastic and firm get damaged. These collagen and elastin, which are normally springy and resilient, when damaged become dry and brittle causing wrinkles and sagging. This normally begins at 35 and continues there onwards.
A high-sugar diet affects apart from damaging collagen also affects the type of collagen you have. Also much would depend how resilient is your skin to wrinkles. Glycation transforms the type of skin you have making it less supple and wrinkle prone. AGEs deactivate the body's natural antioxidant enzymes, thus exposing the skin to sun which leads to further wrinkling.
Those suffering from Diabetes show signs of wrinkling fast, because they have suffered from undetected blood sugar levels for a very long time. Depending upon how well it is controlled, a diabetic can have more number of AGEs in his or her skin as compared to a non-diabetic.
How to Prevent Sugar From Causing Wrinkles?
One can reverse the skin damage by building up new collagen with products that contain retinoids by using lotions and serums that contain retinol
Cut back on sugar intake. It is difficult as even fruits , vegetables and whole grains contain glucose, the type that increases glycation when digested. Watch for hidden sugar in foods, for example barley malt, fruit juice concentrate, maple syrup, molasses etc. One should not take high fructose corn syrup
Diet should be supplemented with vitamins B1 and B6 (at least 1 mg) on a daily basis. One can take multi-vitamin tablets.
One can, on a daily basis, wear a sun-screen which is a broad-spectrum 30
Eat more antioxidant rich fruits, nuts and vegetables to replenish the free radical fighters which help keep the sugar from attaching to proteins
One must eat a balanced diet. Indulging oneself in too much sugar is not good. Excessive sugar has many side- effects and it can also cause wrinkles. Those who are beauty conscious must regulate their sugar intake.
